Lydd is a town and electoral ward in Kent, England, lying on the Romney Marsh. It is one of the larger settlements on the marsh, and the most southerly town in Kent. Lydd reached the height of its prosperity during the 13th century, when it was a corporate member of the Cinque Ports , a “limb” of Romney. Actually located on Denge Marsh , Lydd was one of the first sandy islands to form as the bay evolved into what is now called the Romney Marsh.
The name Hlyda, which derives from the Latin word for “shore”, was found in a Saxon charter dating from the 8th century. Notable buildings in Lydd include the Gordon house longhall, a guildhall and a mediaeval courthouse. Chamberlains and churchwardens accounts of the 15th century survive alongside the town charters. Lydd developed as a settlement during the Romano-British period on a shingle island when the coast at the time cut off Lydd from the mainland.
Before the First World War Lydd became an important artillery practice camp. Experiments with high explosives carried out on the shingle wastes around led to the invention of the explosive Lyddite. Lydd was at one time a garrison town and the area is still an important training ground for the armed forces, at one time having an extensive narrow gauge railway network.
In September , one of four young Dutch men who had landed on the coast between Hythe and Dungeness in a rowing boat was arrested for spying shortly after drinking at the Rising Sun pub.

Canterbury Food Bank has spent four times as much on food in just two weeks as it did in the previous three years. Last week 30 March it supplied enough food to make 1, meals, with the economy forcing more people into financial difficulty. With millions staying at home and carrying out food shopping online, there has been a drop in the number of food donations at supermarkets which is the traditional line of supply.
The food bank recently launched a COVID appeal and has been using cash donations to replenish its stock. This demand is likely to continue for some time and so more support is needed to keep the food bank in operation. With many current volunteers vulnerable to COVID, there is further concern that there will not be enough resource to distribute food to those who need it in weeks to come.
We anticipate this continuing after the COVID lockdown due to the economic dislocation and probable recession that may persist for several years. We have also had to change the way we work radically in order to prevent the spread of infection and manage illness-absence by our volunteers. Coronavirus has changed everything. These are worrying times and no-one knows when things will improve, but we will continue helping those who are least able to help themselves.
People can be part of that by donating to the appeal or by leaving badly-needed food and household essentials at our supermarket bins.
